Employment Rights Act 2025 Download a summary
After more than a year of debate, the Employment Rights Bill became law on 18 December 2025 as the Employment Rights Act 2025. This is the biggest shake-up of employment law in a generation, with over 28 changes rolling out between December 2025 and into 2027. While this phased approach to the reforms gives employers time to prepare, now is the moment to get ahead. Explore what’s changing and what it means for your organisation, including key updates on sickness absence, paternity leave, parental leave, trade union access, and more.

Is Your Business Ready for the Biggest Shift in Employment Law?
The landscape of UK employment law has fundamentally changed. With the Employment Rights Act 2025 now receiving Royal Assent, employers across Great Britain are facing one of the most significant overhauls in workers' rights in decades.
From Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) reforms to changes in Unfair Dismissal rights, the implications for your business are vast. But while the changes are significant, they don't have to be overwhelming - provided you prepare now.
Key Changes You Can't Ignore:
Day-One Family Rights (April 2026):
Qualifying periods for Paternity and Parental Leave are being scrapped. Are your family-friendly policies up to date?
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Revolution (April 2026):
The three-day waiting period is gone. SSP will soon be a day-one right, and the Lower Earnings Limit is being removed. This means more staff will be eligible for sick pay from their very first day of absence.
Sexual Harassment Prevention (October 2026):
The duty on employers is toughening. You will soon be legally required to take "all reasonable steps" to prevent sexual harassment, including from third parties like customers or clients.
Unfair Dismissal (January 2027):
The qualifying period for unfair dismissal protection is being slashed from two years to just six months. This will apply retrospectively, meaning current staff could gain rights overnight.
What Should You Do Now?
Review Your Policies: Your sickness, disciplinary, and family leave policies likely need immediate updates.
Train Your Managers: Do your line managers understand the new "day-one" rights?
Get Expert Support: Trying to navigate this alone is a risk.
